The City of Glens Falls is saddened by the passing of Brian J. Hagstrand, a longtime Glens Falls resident who gave his time and attention to the community through his service on the Glens Falls Tree Commission. Brian passed away on October 26, 2026, at the age of 71.
Brian served as an active member of the Tree Commission, taking part in the discussions, decisions, and planning for the city's trees and green spaces.
In one discussion, Brian made a simple observation that spoke to the importance he placed on this work: trees add value to neighborhoods.
At his final Tree Commission meeting in December 2025, Brian expressed his gratitude for the work being done by the commission, adding at one point that he was proud of his work and felt he had left the commission better than how he had found it.
“I often saw Brian sitting on his porch during my neighborhood walks and would stop to chat," says Mayor Diana Palmer. "Our paths also crossed at St. Mary’s and through our mutual friend and Brian’s fellow tree commissioner, Enid Mastriani. I always enjoyed talking with Brian and appreciated his dedication to our community.”
Today, the city would like to add to the gratitude.
Thank you, Brian, for giving your time to Glens Falls, for caring about your neighborhood and your city, and for helping make our community a greener and better place.
The City of Glens Falls extends its condolences to Brian's wife, Mary Stutzer, his daughter, Laura Hagstrand, his grandchildren, family, friends, and all those who knew him.
