Saratoga Race Course

Saratoga Race Course figured prominently in Thursday night’s annual Eclipse Awards for thoroughbred horse racing. Fourteen of the 17 category winners raced at Saratoga.

Leading the way was Horse of the Year and Older Dirt Male winner Gun Runner, who won the Whitney and Woodward — the former while running with a horseshoe caught in his tail for the last 5 furlongs.

Horses that raced at Saratoga swept the 2- and 3-year-old honors. Good Magic (2-year-old Male) was second in his debut on Aug. 26, while Caledonia Road (2-year-old Filly) won her debut on Sept. 3. West Coast (3-year-old Male) won the Travers, and Abel Tasman (3-year-old Filly) won the Coaching Club American Oaks.

Saratoga also came up big in turf categories. Male Turf Horse winner World Approval captured the Fourstardave at the Spa, while Female Turf Horse winner Lady Eli won the Diana and Ballston Spa.

Personal Ensign winner Forever Unbridled won the Older Dirt Female Eclipse, while Steeplechase winner Scorpiancer was second in the A.P. Smithwick and third in the New York Turf Writers Cup.

In the human categories, Jose Ortiz captured the meet’s riding title en route to being named Outstanding Jockey, while Mechanicville native Chad Brown, who was second in the trainer standings, won the Outstanding Trainer Eclipse. Outstanding Owner Juddmonte Farms and Outstanding Breeder Clearsky Farms also raced many horses during the 40-day meet.
