Horses take off from the starting gate in the first race of the 2017 Saratoga Race Course meet in Saratoga Springs.

With the addition of one week to this summer’s Saratoga Race Course thoroughbred meet, the stakes schedule was likely only to get fuller, and on Friday the New York Racing Association confirmed that.

Still at 40 racing days, racing Wednesdays through Sundays, the meet will feature 76 stakes worth $20.85 million from opening day on Thursday, July 11 through Labor Day, Sept. 2.

The schedule is again highlighted by the 150th running of the Grade I, $1.25 million Travers Stakes for 3-year-olds on Aug. 24. The second anchor stakes, though down $200,000 in purses from last year, will be the Grade I, $1 million Whitney for 3-year-olds and up on Aug. 3.

Whitney weekend kicks off the second jewels of the newly created Turf Tiara and Turf Trinity, featuring the $750,000 Saratoga Oaks on Aug. 2 and $1 million Saratoga Derby on Aug. 4.

Opening day will feature a pair of graded stakes: the Grade III Schuylerville for 2-year-old fillies and Grade III Quick Call for 3-year-olds on turf.

The Rockville Centre, previously run at Belmont Park, has moved to July 17 at Saratoga and will go as the $100,000 Rick Violette, a 6-furlong spint for New York-bred juveniles in honor of the late, longtime New York trainer and former president of the New York Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association.

Three other new stakes this year are the Grade III, $150,000 Forbidden Apple on July 12, the $100,000 Mahony on Aug. 7, named after Patrick Mahony, the longtime NYRA senior vice president of mutuels, the $100,000 Stillwater (previously the Lynbrook at Belmont) on July 18 and the $100,000 Galway on Aug. 11.

In creating the Turf Tiara and Turf Trinity, NYRA altered some of its other Saratoga turf stakes. The Grade III Lake George and Grade II National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame both will be run at a mile instead of 1 1/16 miles. The Grade I Sword Dancer’s purse will be $850,000, down $150,000 from last year, and both the Grade II Lake Placid and Grade III Saranac received purse decreases of $100,000. Also, the Grade I A.P. Smithwick steeplechase received a purse decrease of $25,000.

The Grade I Coaching Club American Oaks, for 3-year-old fillies on the dirt, received a $200,000 purse increase to $500,000.
