PORTLAND, Maine — The Adirondack Thunder got their 2018-2019 ECHL season off to a fine start with a 6-3 win over Maine at Cross Insurance Arena on Saturday.
Forward John Edwardh led the Thunder with two goals and two assists. Defenseman Desmond Bergin and forward Brian Ward each added a goal and an assist, and goaltender Colton Phinney had a strong game, turning away 26 shots.
The Thunder scored early and often. Ward tallied just 1:02 into the game, with assists to Edwardh and Bergin, who then struck himself at 5:06. Edwardh next scored a power-play goal — the first of two Adirondack scored — at 9:14 to give the Thunder a 3-0 lead.
Maine scored in the first and then early in the second to make it 3-2 at 1:31. Jordan McNaughton found Conor Riley for a score just 35 seconds later to make it a 4-2 Thunder lead.
Edwardh’s second goal at 3:30 of the second made it 5-2
Shane Conacher’s power-play goal at 13:36 on assists from Matias Cleland and Edwardh closed the scoring.
Adirondack plays two games at the league’s other new team, Newfoundland, on Tuesday and Wednesday. The Growlers split a pair of games with Florida this weekend.
