Ten local wrestlers, including three former Section II champs, received at-large bids Wednesday to the New York State Wrestling Championships.
The state meet is scheduled for Feb. 22-23 at the Times Union Center in Albany.
Former Section II champs Ryan Sleezer of Queensbury, Logan Duers of Hadley-Luzerne/Lake George and Nolan McNeill of Warrensburg received at-large bids after placing second at Saturday’s Section II state qualifier.
Sleezer — a senior who lost to his twin brother, Dylan, in Saturday’s Division I (large school) final at 113 pounds — won at 106 last year and was a runner-up at 99 the year before. He is joined as an at-large qualifier in D-I by Saratoga Springs junior Eric Griskowitz (138), a former two-time Section II runner-up who placed third Saturday after being the No. 1 seed.
Duers and McNeill, both seniors, were Section II runners-up in Division II at 152 and 195, respectively. McNeill, who went 2-2 at the state meet last year, lost by injury default in the finals Saturday night. Duers lost by fall to five-time Section II champ Zack Lawrence of Duanesburg.
Also receiving at-large bids in D-II were Hudson Falls sophomore Chris Petteys (106), a Section II runner-up for the second year in a row; Whitehall-Fort Ann junior Brendan Covey (195); and four more wrestlers from Warrensburg: freshmen Dylan Winchell (113) and Tanner McKenna (120), sophomore Hunter McKenna (145) and senior Chris Wilson (220).
Covey, Winchell and McKenna all placed third in Section II on Saturday, but all have 40 or more wins this season.
Four at-large bids from across the state are added to fill out 16-man brackets for each weight class at the state meet in Division I and II.
At-large bids are determined by a formula that includes overall season record (wins minus losses), bonus points based on previous state and sectional finishes, and power points based on a strength-of-section component.
The 10 area at-large qualifiers join the five local wrestlers who won Section II championships on Saturday: Queensbury’s Dylan Sleezer (113), South Glens Falls senior Vinny Santilli (126) and Saratoga senior Brant Robinson (195) in D-I, and Corinth sophomore Alec Richards (138) and H-L/LG senior Cody York (182) in D-II.
