HUDSON FALLS — Tyler Linendoll and Jaime Olvera face each other all the time in the Salem-Cambridge wrestling room.

So when the two Cambridge juniors had the unenviable task of squaring off for the 145-pound weight class title Saturday in the Thomas J. Chickanis Memorial Wrestling Tournament, they just focused on the job at hand.

“We wrestle together in practice every day, we know each other’s techniques,” said Linendoll, who plans to drop down to 138 after Christmas break. “We’re pretty much the same person when it comes to wrestling, same strengths.”

“He’s a little stronger than me, but our skill level is about equal,” Olvera said. “He’s been wrestling a year or two longer than me.”

In a scoreless match, Linendoll took advantage of the one opening Olvera left him, throwing on a headlock and pinning Olvera in 3:18 for his first-ever tournament title. The win helped Salem-Cambridge to a fourth-place finish, the best of the local teams in the Chickanis Tournament.

“We both like to headlock, so we just kind of work from there — if we see something we go with it,” Linendoll said. “I saw it there and I went with it.”

Olvera nodded and said with a smile, “I would have done the same thing.”

“I felt bad for them because that was Jaime Olvera’s first finals, and he had to wrestle another Salem-Cambridge kid,” head coach Frank Fronhofer II said. “Jaime wasn’t seeded and he beat the third seed and got to the finals. As a coach, it’s great to see, but I did feel bad for them that they had to wrestle each other in the finals.”

Section III power Carthage — a year after having to turn around 15 minutes from Hudson Falls when the tournament was called off by a snowstorm — rolled to the team title with 232 points. Shenendehowa was second.

Salem-Cambridge finished with 147 team points, placing seven of eight wrestlers in the top four.

Senior Zac Cummings captured the 120-pound title with an 8-4 win over Shenendehowa’s Mike Dimonda.

“It was the toughest weight class in the tournament — there were nine kids with winning records, so it was a good test for him,” Fronhofer said of Cummings. “That was the best I’ve seen him wrestle all year.”

Also for S-C, Hunter Day was runner-up at 152, while David McFarland (160) took third, and Charlie Dill (99) and Jacob Lisowski (113) were fourth.

Hudson Falls finished seventh, getting a second place from Tom Hill at 195. Jack Repsis (106) and Dametrick LaRock (170) took third, and Joe Pomainville (152) was fourth.

Glens Falls’ Kaleb Dingmon finished fourth at 285.
