Five local wrestlers who were runners-up at the Section II state qualifier meet received at-large bids Wednesday to the New York State Wrestling Championships.

The state meet is scheduled for Feb. 23-24 at the Times Union Center in Albany.

Queensbury seniors Dom Nassivera and Nico Mattia both qualified in Division I (large schools) after finishing as Section II runners-up at 182 and 195 pounds, respectively.

Joining them in D-I is Saratoga Springs senior Jordan Sartin (113), and in Division II (small schools), Warrensburg’s Dylan Winchell (106) and Jack Binder (220). Altogether 14 Section II wrestlers received at-large bids to states.

Four at-large bids from across the state are added to fill out 16-man brackets for each weight class at the state tournament in Division I and II.

At-large bids are determined by a formula that includes overall season record (wins minus losses), bonus points based on previous state and sectional finishes, and power points based on a strength-of-section component.

Mattia, 34-4 this season, was the top seed at 195 in D-I, but lost a 5-3 heartbreaker to Niskayuna’s Reggie Melvin in the Section II finals.

Nassivera (27-10), who was pinned by Ballston Spa’s Jake Cook in the Section II finals, was a No. 5 at-large qualifier, but moved up because Section X does not have an entry at 182. Sartin (40-2) is a former Section II runner-up.

In D-II, Binder was a Section II champ last year at 220, but came up just short in a 3-2 loss to Cohoes’ Reggie Poulin on Saturday night. It was Binder’s only loss of the season after 34 wins.

Winchell (33-8), an eighth-grader, placed third in D-II, but had more points than runner-up Austin Delisle of Ravena and finished ahead of him for an at-large spot. Winchell lost to Section II champ Joey Scheeren of Galway in the semifinals.

Three local wrestlers are first alternates — South Glens Falls’ Logan Barody (126) in D-I, and Warrensburg’s Hunter McKenna (145) and Dan Monthony (170) in D-II. They may go only if an at-large entry ahead of them pulls out.

The five area at-large qualifiers join the seven local wrestlers who won Section II championships: Queensbury’s Ryan Sleezer (106) and South Glens Falls’ Brock Delsignore (120) in D-I, and in D-II, Salem-Cambridge’s Zac Cummings (113), Schuylerville’s Orion Anderson (126), Hadley-Luzerne/Lake George’s Logan Duers (145) and Rich Conte (170), and Warrensburg’s Nolan McNeill (182).
