QUEENSBURY — Rebecca Jaeger drove in the game’s only run on her team’s only hit Wednesday as Lake George edged Fort Ann 1-0 in a non-league softball game at the Adirondack Sports Complex.
Jaeger and Tyler Bergman combined to pitch a one-hitter with 12 strikeouts for the Warriors, who improved to 2-0.
They outdueled Fort Ann senior Kayla Bailey, who struck out 15 but suffered her first loss of the season. The Cardinals fell to 3-1.
“It was a real pitchers’ duel,” Lake George coach Kyle Manny said. “Everybody on the mound was dealing, so we had to take advantage when we did have somebody on base.”
Lake George scored its only run in the top of the fourth inning, as Bergman walked, stole second and raced home on Jaeger’s double.
Sarah Paige singled for Fort Ann’s only hit of the game.
The Cardinals threatened in the bottom of the sixth, putting two runners on base with two outs, but Jaeger was able to get out of the inning unscathed.
Lake George’s 1-0 win came a day after its 19-5 victory over Hoosic Valley, also played at the Dome, in which the Warriors rattled off 15 hits.
“It was two different storylines,” Manny said. “(Tuesday) we were really hitting the ball, and today was not an offensive day — we relied on pitching and solid defense.”
The Warriors are replacing six seniors who graduated from key positions last year, but are building around Jaeger, Bergman and some returning bats.
“We’re still trying to search for an identity of where this team is going to be this season,” Manny said.
