WILLSBORO — Johnsburg got its first taste of action as a state-ranked girls soccer team Wednesday, beating Willsboro 2-1 on a go-ahead goal with 34 seconds left in a Northern Soccer League contest.
The Jaguars are ranked ninth in Class D in the first state poll, released Tuesday night. Coach Ryan Carpenter said he shared the information with his team before the game.
“Then after the game I told them it might not be what they’re used to, but now it’s an expectation that has to be met and embraced to play at that level,” Carpenter said.
Johnsburg (4-1 league and overall) got the go-ahead goal when Cassie Dunbar, whom Carpenter had moved to a different spot shortly before the play, brought the ball down and fed June McCarthy.
“We were controlling the ball, we just had to be a little more aggressive at that point,” Carpenter said.
Khaleah Cleveland had the other Johnsburg score.
