ROTTERDAM — The Schuylerville boys soccer team, chasing its first Section II finals appearance since 2007, came up short Tuesday in heartbreaking fashion.
The Black Horses suffered a 3-2 overtime loss to Ichabod Crane in the Class B semifinals of the Section II Boys Soccer Tournament at Mohonasen High School.
“It was a good game — we had them beat, but there were a lot of variables out of our control,” Schuylerville coach Dave Gauci said in a phone conversation. “We did what we could do.”
Ichabod Crane rallied from a 2-1 deficit, tying the score on a direct kick by Anthony Carlucci with six minutes left in regulation. Carlucci scored again with about three minutes left in the first overtime, sending the two-time-defending-champion Riders into the finals for the seventh time in eight years.
Mike Lanfear scored both goals for Schuylerville in a span of five minutes early in the second half.
However, after a penalty call outside the box in the final minutes, Carlucci tied the score 2-2 with his direct kick.
“The kid placed it well — there were nothing our goalie could do,” Gauci said.
The Black Horses narrowly missed a great scoring chance late in the first overtime.
“We had a shot that squeaked right by the post,” Gauci said. “It was a tough angle, but we were starting to celebrate — and it just rolled across the goal mouth.”
Schuylerville, the third seed, saw its season end with a 14-5 overall record.
“The kids played hard and we had our chances,” Gauci said. “I don’t think I’ve had a tougher (loss) in 20 years.”
