FONDA — Fort Ann is headed back to the championship game after a very long night of soccer at Fonda-Fultonville High School.
The top-seeded Cardinals played Northville to a 4-4 tie through regulation and four overtimes. Fort Ann won the tie-breaking penalty kicks, 2-1, to advance.
The Cards will face New Lebanon in the Class D title game on Wednesday at Mechanicville at 5 p.m. This will be the eighth championship game for Fort Ann, which is still seeking its first title.
For the postgame penalty kick session, coach Jason Humiston put senior midfielder Amanda Godfrey in goal. Northville went 1 for 5 against Godfrey.
“I just wanted to have an athletic senior in there,” Humiston said. “Amanda’s super quick and has great instincts.”

Godfrey took the first penalty kick for Fort Ann and made it. All other shots failed for both teams until Kayla Bailey came up as the Cardinals’ fifth shooter. She converted her try to send Fort Ann back to the finals.
“She’s our pitcher, a state title winner ... if anybody can take the pressure in that situation, it’s her,” Humiston said.
Sarah Paige scored all four of Fort Ann’s goals during regulation, giving her 43 goals for the season. But it was a back-and-forth game, with neither team gaining more than a one-goal lead. The Cards, down 2-1 at halftime, had a 4-3 lead late in regulation before Northville tied it.
“I kind of wanted to get to PKs,” Humiston said. “I thought we’d have a better chance. We practice it quite a bit.”
Northville had beaten Fort Ann in last year’s championship game.
