LAKE GEORGE — Graceann Bennett scored 20 points as the Lake George girls basketball team handed Warrensburg its first loss of the season, 59-51 on Friday night.

The Warriors, ranked 19th in the state in Class C, improved to 9-2 in the Adirondack League, 11-2 overall, with their ninth straight victory that also clinched Division 1. The Burghers fell to 10-1, 14-1. Warrensburg was ranked 10th in Class C this week.

“Both teams went toe to toe, back and forth, there was tremendous energy in the building,” Lake George head coach Rob Tefft said. “It was awesome to watch.”

Mikayla Duffy added 12 points and Nikki Hladik chipped in with 11 for the Warriors, who outscored Warrensburg 20-12 in the fourth quarter.

“There were some streaks in the game — they got up by five at one point, we got up by six,” Tefft said. “Our kids played with a lot of composure and we had a really good fourth quarter. We made a little run there — Jade Baker hit a big 3 from the corner and Mikayla Duffy had a jump shot after that, and we played good defense down the stretch.”

Hope Boland led Warrensburg, which clinched Division 2 on Wednesday, with 20 points, and Sara Langworthy added 11. Lake George held Megan Hughes, the Burghers’ leading scorer who averages 16 points per game, to four points.

The game could be a preview of next month’s Adirondack League championship, but Tefft wouldn’t go that far.

“We have a lot of work to do and a lot of games to play before we get there,” Tefft said. “Time will tell, as always. Warrensburg is a very good team.”
