Graceann Bennett said when she started playing competitive basketball, she had no idea that people counted all the points one might score.

But they do, and Wednesday night the Lake George senior reached a number few have achieved. Bennett scored her 2,000th career point early in the first quarter of the Warriors’ 49-14 Adirondack League win over Granville.

The Georgetown-bound Bennett finished the game with 19 points, 16 rebounds, six blocked shots and four assists, as Lake George won its 12th consecutive game and improved to 14-2 overall.

Bennett, who has 2,015 points, is eighth on Section II’s all-time scoring list, just five points behind 2000 Albany graduate Carolyn Gottstein.

The 6-foot-2 Bennett, who has come back from two knee surgeries in two years, is just glad she’s able to play and contribute this season. She originally thought this season might be iffy.

“For a second, I thought of some of these milestones I wouldn’t be able to achieve, but I had so many of these great memories in high school I wouldn’t have traded,” she said. “To have had all these experiences, it’s unbelievable, a fairy tale.”

Bennett is most happy about the team’s development.

“We had a rocky start, but none of us were fazed by it,” she said. “We were ignoring the noise and staying true to who we were. We knew for us, (the development) was going to come at a different time than other teams.”
