GLENS FALLS — Through the entirety of the Class AA semifinal game between top-seeded Saratoga Springs and No. 4 Colonie, there were waves of chaos followed with periods of fluid, articulate basketball.

Colonie took an early 11-2 lead in the first quarter playing a fast-paced style and capitalizing on the Blue Streaks’ mishaps. Then it was the Raiders’ turn to ride a wave of chaos as Saratoga took the lead 23-14 into halftime and did not relinquish it until the fourth quarter.

The Raiders relied on drive and kick 3-pointers to eventually pull ahead, which had not been working for three quarters, but suddenly treys started to drop.

Colonie buried three fourth quarter 3-pointers, scored 22 fourth quarter points and held the Blue Streaks to eight points in the final eight minutes to win 48-41 in a Class AA semifinal of the Section II Boys Basketball tournament.

“We actually said we wanted to hold them to 48 points,” Saratoga coach Matt Usher said. “We were shooting for 12 (points) a quarter and we held them to 48. It was not enough.”

Though Saratoga accomplished what it set out to do defensively, the Blue Streaks shot just 42 percent from the field, including 6 of 18 from deep.

Nick Chudy hit three 3-pointers in the first half, and sparked Saratoga’s early comeback, but was held to one trey in second half.

Foul shots played a role in Colonie pulling off the upset. The Raiders made 12 of 14 shots while Saratoga only got to the line seven times, making five of them.

For Colonie, Will Aybar scored a game-high 15 points, with three 3-pointers and Isaiah Moll added 13.

Moll registered a double-double by pulling down 11 rebounds also.

It was an emotional scene after the game as Saratoga graduates five seniors. Chudy, a senior, finished with 12 points while fellow senior Matthew Larkin scored a team-high 14.

“Their ball pressure on the wings took us out of our flow,” Usher said. “They took charge and made our wings a little uncomfortable and that made it difficult for us to get into the flow of our offense.”
