GLENS FALLS — Joseph Girard III poured in 58 points Friday night as the Glens Falls boys basketball team pulled out a 92-88 overtime thriller over Schuylerville.
The win kept the Indians on top of the Foothills Council at 7-0, 8-1 overall, and came after a nearly two-week layoff over the holiday break.
The Black Horses (3-5, 4-5) rallied from a 58-47 deficit at the end of the third quarter with a 32-point outburst in the fourth — fueled by Cayten Rutland, who scored 17 of his 20 points in the period.
Rutland knocked down a 3-pointer to pull Schuylerville into a 79-79 tie with eight seconds left in regulation. A Glens Falls shot at the buzzer did not fall.
“They took a five-point lead in overtime, but we were able to toughen up on defense and got the lead back, and we made our foul shots down the stretch,” Indians head coach Rob Girard said.
Nick Budesheim led Schuylerville with 31 points, Paul Harshbarger scored 17 points and Stratton Sherman added 15 for the Horses.
Trent Girard netted 13 points for Glens Falls, which had led by as many as 13 points, but saw more than one double-digit lead whittled down by Schuylerville during the game.
“We’ll take the win, but we need to play better defense than we did tonight,” Rob Girard said. “They got a lot of 50-50 balls — they won that battle. We had 13 days off since we played in the Florida tournament — that takes a toll. We were a little rusty, but no excuses — we have some work to do.”
