Girard breaks all-time state scoring record

Joseph Girard III celebrates setting the all-time state scoring record on Jan. 31 in Amsterdam. Gatorade named Girard as New York's 2017-18 Boys Basketball Player of the Year.

Joseph Girard III woke up Thursday morning to chatter on Twitter that Gatorade selected him as one of its players of the year.

Skeptical at first, Girard told his mother and she suggested he check his email to see if there was any official notice given about the award.

To his surprise, a message in his inbox read that it was true, Gatorade named Girard New York’s 2017-18 Boys Basketball Player of the Year.

“I was surprised and excited at the same time,” Girard said. “A goal of mine going into this year was to win that award. Last year I was nominated but did not win.”

Girard is the first boys basketball in Glens Falls history to receive the Gatorade award. He is now a finalist for Gatorade’s National Player of the Year award which will be announced in March.

As part of the honor, Girard is able to choose a national or local sports organization that will receive a $1,000 grant as part of the Gatorade Play It Forward Program.

Earlier this week, Girard was named MVP of the Foothills council and selected as a MaxPreps National Player of the Year finalist.

Girard averaged 50 points per game this season and led Glens Falls to a 20-3 record overall. The 6 foot 2 guard has 22 NCAA Division I offers, which include Duke, Michigan and Syracuse.

“You see athletes give back to charities and create their own so this is a small stepping stone for me and an early stage of that,” Girard said. “Maybe the Fredette Foundation or something like that, but I have not made a decision on where I’ll give (the money) to yet.”
