GLENS FALLS — Joseph Girard III got the news while sitting in class on Tuesday.
JG3 added another persona to a list that already includes Mr. 4,000 as Glens Falls is now also home to Mr. Basketball.
The Basketball Coaches Association of New York announced on Tuesday that Girard III earned the state’s top high school boys basketball honor, making the standout senior only the third player in Section II history to earn Mr. Basketball. Shenendehowa’s Kevin Huerter (2016) and Greg Koubek (1987) won it previously.
“This is something I have worked for my whole life,” Girard III said. “Being Mr. Basketball speaks for itself. Greg Koubek is the first player ever to reach four final fours and Kevin Huerter is making millions in the NBA right now.
“So it is special and I’ve worked for this. But at the same time, I have to stay focused because the task in front of me has still yet to be done.”
Tuesday morning, Girard III shared the news with his nearly 50,000 Instagram followers and 12,500 Twitter followers.
It’s been a goal of mine my whole life... Blessed to be Selected as Mr. Basketball in New York State! 🙌🏻❤️🖤— Joseph Girard III (@JG3_____) March 12, 2019
Girard III was named the Gatorade Player of the Year in New York as well as USA Today’s New York Player of the Year last season. He announced this fall he will play basketball at Syracuse University.
This season, Girard III was named MVP of the 2018-19 Foothills Council Boys Basketball All-Star Team averaging 49.8 points per game for the Indians.
Girard III and the Indians (27-1) are not done yet as their run in the State Boys Basketball continues against Olean (25-0) of Section VI on Friday at 9:30 a.m. in Binghamton. The winner will play at 5:15 p.m. Saturday in the state championship.
Though becoming Mr. Basketball is a childhood dream realized, Girard III feels the honor will not feel complete without bookending it with a state championship.
“This is an individual award,” Girard III said. “Of course I’ll remember it forever but there are a lot more team awards I’d rather have.”
