PORTLAND, Maine -- The Adirondack Phantoms gave up three third-period goals on their way to a franchise-record eighth consecutive loss, a 5-2 defeat to the Portland Pirates in front of a crowd of 6,783 at the Portland Ice Arena.

The Phantoms trailed 2-1 heading into the third period, but gave up two goals in the first 5:17, including one shorthanded, to fall behind 4-1. Denis Hamel's first goal with the Phantoms briefly cut it to 4-2 9:33 into the period, but Portland added an insurance goal 2:25 later.

Johan Backlund allowed five goals on 19 shots. The Phantoms outshot Portland 30-19.

The losing streak surpasses the franchise record of six. The Philadelphia Phantoms lost six in a row three times in their history, and last year's Adirondack team also lost six in a row.

The eight-game losing streak also ties a record for an Adirondack AHL team. The Red Wings lost eight in a row in the '93-'94 and '95-'96 seasons.

The Phantoms (2-9-1-0) haven't registered a point in seven games, since an overtime loss to Albany on Oct. 16. They haven't won since beating Syracuse 3-2 on Oct. 15. Their five points are the fewest in the American Hockey League.

David Laliberte's second goal of the season, a power-play tally, tied the game at 1 in the first period. Joonas Lehtivuori and Erik Gustafsson assisted. Gustafsson had two assists.

The Phantoms had plenty of chances to go ahead in the second, outshooting Portland 13-5. But it was Portland, who jumped ahead, getting a goal from David McCauley.

Portland rookie Luke Adam scored his league-leading 10th goal.

Hamel's goal, on a breakaway sparked by Marc-Andre Bourdon, was his 291st in the AHL. He's the league's fifth-leading scorer among active players.
