Stefanik has been moving backward
If you have read any of my earlier letters to the editor, you will know that I, along with 98 percent of our scientists, consider global warming to be a human-caused crisis, in opposition to our current administration, which denies that there even is such a thing as global warming.
Let me tell you that I am a Republican, and as such, I will be voting for Tedra Cobb for Congress come Election Day, and I hope you will, too. Here are my reasons why: On Dec. 1, 2015, Elise Stefanik voted to undo the restrictions on greenhouse gas emissions, allowing our existing coal-fired energy plants to continue polluting our atmosphere, not only contributing to global warming, but also emitting the largest source of acid rain to the Adirondacks. On Feb. 16, 2017, she voted to undo the rules that protect streams and ground water from pollution by coal mining operations. And on July 19, 2018, she voted to strip EPA funding by $328 million, and underfund the Land and Water Conservation Fund. I am very disappointed in her, and feel that she is more interested in the big coal companies and their profits than she is in us. When I spoke to two of her representatives at different times about her acceptance of funds from the Koch brothers, I was met with dead silence, which surely tells us something!
So again, I repeat, please vote for Tedra Cobb for Congress in November.
This election, take a stand for democracy
A generation ago, a group of extremely wealthy and conservative men, including the Koch Brothers and the “Vulture Capitalist” Paul Singer, set out to overthrow the system of governance that had brought prosperity to America since World War II. Our system encourages free enterprise, while providing oversight of the businesses it generated through regulations to curb abuses. It also provided protections like Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid for the elderly and the ill. The billionaires invested millions in funding candidates like Elise Stefanik to pursue their goal of shrinking this system, its taxes and its protections, until it could be “drowned in a bathtub.” Today, they have nearly succeeded. November’s election may decide they completely succeed. It may be the most important election in the lives of any living person.
Thanks to the election of Donald Trump, the would-be oligarchs now have the president of their dreams. This administration is now in the process of dismantling health, safety, worker, consumer and environmental protections. Congress goes merrily along. It came within the late John McCain’s vote of killing the Affordable Care Act, and passed a budget-busting tax cut bill that (surprise!) is not paying for itself. The Republican leadership now says we must reduce “entitlements” to make up the difference.
The Supreme Court is now dominated by very young and very conservative justices, who show no problem with voter suppression and gross gerrymandering. Newest justice is on record as saying the president should not be indicted for crimes he may have committed, because it might distract him.
Elise Stefanik has been a great investment for the oligarchs, and will be only worse if re-elected. A House controlled by Democrats may be the last line of defense for our democracy and our people.
Elect Tedra Cobb.

Stefanik has proven record in Congress
I believe it’s time to stop all of the negative news about our Congresswoman Elise Stefanik. She has stated many times that her forum is to help all in the 21st District, and I know she continues to do so.
When you look into Elise’s voting record, you’ll find that the 21st comes first. As reported by the Lugars Center 2017 Index, out of 438 House representatives, your congresswoman ranks 27th. That puts Elise in the top 10 percent for bipartisan votes. She’s crossed party lines many, many times to achieve this high ranking, and that’s great for all who live in the district.
In addition, she’s co-sponsored H. Res. 1090 to “Break the Gridlock.” This is intended to break through the legislative gridlocks and promote common sense governing. That will be a positive step for all of us.
As we all know, small businesses are the backbone of the 21st, as Elise has worked hard for them. The National Federation of Independent Business just awarded her their “Guardian of Small Business” for her work in Congress to support small business and promote entrepreneurship.
Living in the North Country comes with the opportunity for many to hunt and target shoot. For Congresswoman Stefanik’s strong support of the Second Amendment, she has received an “A” rating by the NRA and New York State Rifle and Pistol Association. Tom King, president of NYSRPA, states Tedra Cobb’s rating of an “F” is the lowest rating ever for a North Country congressional candidate.
Because of Congresswoman Stefanik’s proven position of new ideas, new leadership and real results, she has my vote on Nov. 6 and has worked hard for yours!
