How ironic that The Post-Star gave Elise Stefanik a pat on the back for being so independent and voting to repeal Trump's emergency declaration. She can call herself a constitutional conservative and say she wants to restrain executive overreach all she wants. How nice. But please don't ever forget that this past week she also voted no on HR1, which is a bill that starts us on the path of removing the influence of big money on our government. It would shine the light of day on the dark money in politics, rein in lobbyists, and require all presidential candidates to release their taxes. It is a bill that is overwhelmingly approved of by the people of the United States, whether liberal or conservative, Republican or Democrat, city folk or country cousin. In fact, the only people who could possibly think voting no on this bill is a good idea are the super wealthy who benefit from the current system, and the politicians who suck up their money like leeches. A "constitutionally conservative" leech is still a leech.
Mitch McConnell will likely refuse to allow a vote on this bill in the Senate, so afraid is he of even slowing down the gravy train. I hope the people of this country rise up and shame him into doing the right thing. Bring it up for a vote, and may we all remember those votes come the next election. Come what may, I will remember that Elise Stefanik voted against returning the power of democracy to the people of this country. Will you?
