The 21st Congressional District midterm election on Nov. 6 is critical for the future of our region and country. There are striking contrasts between Democratic candidate Tedra Cobb and Republican candidate Elise Stefanik. Health care is a major expense for our families. Tedra advocates for affordable health care that is portable across state boundaries. We pay for Elise’s congressional health care, yet she voted to repeal the Affordable Care Act and take ours away. People are concerned about gun control, especially school safety. Tedra knows the difference between military assault rifles and deer rifles, and wants better background checks. Elise cosponsored legislation for concealed weapon reciprocity, allowing unseen guns to cross into New York.
U.S. House Speaker Paul Ryan just attended a campaign rally for Rep. Stefanik, and praised the Trump tax cuts, but failed to mention a runaway deficit that will top $1 trillion. Ryan, Stefanik and the Republicans will soon call for reductions in Social Security, Medicare and other social programs, endangering the poor and elderly. They don’t care and don’t want a debate.
Trump’s dysfunctional USEPA is undoing policies and threatening our region’s clean air and water and global climate. The North Country knows weather patterns are changing. Ask any forester, fisherman, farmer or someone working in winter businesses. Climate change is hurting their jobs. Tedra supports the U.S. Climate Alliance. Elise is silent on climate change.
Elise Stefanik is a Trumpian partisan, voting with the president 90 percent of the time. Tedra has traveled our region and listened to Republicans, independents and Democrats. Tedra will take a moderate approach and represent all of us. Elise can’t be trusted to do the same. Please vote for Tedra Cobb on Nov. 6.
