I am writing in regard to Mr. Tingley's article from Sunday, Feb. 28 titled "I don't want to survive bombs."
His comment "Any type of nuclear strike within a few hundred miles – New York City for instance – could essentially make our region unlivable, or worse, all those down-staters might evacuate into our backyards" is despicable, condescending, racist and bigoted. Hardly the remark one would expect to hear from a liberal Democrat. Hypocrisy at its finest, which kind of sums up the liberal movement.
I, as many others, I am sure, have been blessed to have grown up in New York City. We had the opportunity to live among people from all over the world. You are exposed to many ethnic cultures and cuisines, have the opportunity to attend some of the best schools; also some of the best hospitals in the country, not to mention Broadway and the museums. After a horrific attack on 9/11, we bounced back, showing our strength. There is good and bad in all people. My husband and I came up here to spend a peaceful retirement. It is nice to know that you welcome us so warmly.
I feel you owe all the New York City people an apology.
Elizabeth Sullivan, Fort Ann
Editor’s Note: In his defense, Mr. Tingley points out he did marry a woman from Long Island, so he must like down-staters a little.
