I am constantly amazed at the world around us. I see the human race intent on destroying itself. I see government agencies, who we depend on to protect us, allowing toxic poisons infiltrating the very air we breathe. Here is a fact: the EPA allows a cancer-causing chemical, benzene, to exist in every gallon of gasoline you put in your vehicle. There is an average of approximately 1 percent benzene in gasoline, and it is released into the air we breathe in gas station vapors and vehicle exhausts. New York DEC operates air quality test stations throughout the state and monitors chemicals such as benzene. You can find all the facts on the internet. Where am I going with this? Fact 2: It was recently announced that our area claims the distinction of having one of the highest incidence of certain types of cancer in the state. I don't know what is the atmospheric recipe that causes cancer. I wish we did. I do know I'd rather not see more toxic chemicals released into the air we breathe. Fact 3: A local industry is proposing to burn a fuel that contains over 50 percent plastic. Will that mean that more toxins will be released into the air we breathe? Probably. The DEC has opened a short period of public comment on this plan. With only days to go, I am amazed that local government and citizens have been mostly silent. As I stated, I am constantly amazed at the world around me. And saddened.
