Bravos to the Essex County Board of Supervisors for voting to raise the age to buy tobacco products to 21 in Essex County. We have advocated for Warren County to raise the age, too, and we won’t again run through all of the many arguments for doing it. The bottom line is that most smokers start when they are teenagers, and smoking is very bad for your health. Despite a decline in the popularity of smoking, it still causes about 1,300 deaths a day in the U.S., or about 480,000 deaths a year. Raising the age will stop some young people from taking up this fatal habit, and Essex County will reap large benefits in health care savings and the prevention of human suffering. Although 13 other New York counties have raised the age, Essex is the first in the North Country. Essex County is leading the way and soon, we hope, other counties in the region will follow.
