INDIAN LAKE — State Police and state forest rangers are investigating the death of a Connecticut man who died after a fall while hiking at OK Slip Falls on Friday.
Thomas J. Ullman, 67, of New Haven, Connecticut, was found off the trail around 11 p.m. Friday, according to State Police. The trail, over 6 miles round trip, goes to a popular waterfall and overlook on the Hudson River.
State Police Capt. Robert Lafountain said Ullman was hiking alone and was believed to have slipped and fallen off the cliff known as a “slide” on the trail, as it overlooks the Hudson River gorge. He said there was broken vegetation along the slide that indicated someone had fallen through it.
The state Department of Environmental Conservation said Ullman was found part of the way down the slide, on a ledge, around 11 p.m. Forest rangers worked through the night, scaling the slide and using ropes to recover the body early Saturday morning, as an ice storm approached.
An autopsy was scheduled for later Monday at Albany Medical Center.
The trail on state land off Route 28 is a popular one, with views of a huge waterfall.
LaFountain said Ullman was an experienced hiker.
“It’s a tragedy,” he said.
Ullman had a seasonal home in Olmstedville, where he had been staying before he went hiking on Friday. A family member reported him overdue from his hike around 5:30 p.m.
He was a longtime lawyer in Connecticut, where he worked as chief public defender until retiring last summer.
