GREENWICH — State Police are investigating the death of a man who died while snowmobiling on a trail off Derby Road on Friday morning.

Authorities said the man was riding on a trail at a low speed when he fell off the snowmobile shortly after 10:30 a.m., and efforts to resuscitate him were to no avail. A friend was riding behind him, and did not believe he hit anything before he fell off.

Police said there were no apparent external injuries, so they are questioning whether a medical problem played a role in the death. An autopsy was to be conducted in the coming days to determine a cause of death.

Greenwich firefighters and Easton-Greenwich Rescue Squad responded to the call along with State Police.
