Northway crash and fire

A tractor-trailer fire fills the air with heavy black smoke Tuesday evening northbound on the Northway in Saratoga Springs.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — A tractor-trailer hauling trailers crashed and caught fire Tuesday evening, sending the driver to the hospital and snarling Northway traffic for hours.

Jason J. Greenfield, 40, of Pine Knot, Kentucky, was traveling northbound at about 5:50 p.m. when a front tire came off of the vehicle near Exit 15, State Police said.

Greenfield lost control and over-corrected the 2000 Volvo with flatbed trailer, which was hauling six small utility trailers. The vehicle struck the guiderail and bridge overpass, continuing across all three lanes of traffic and exiting the roadway and coming to rest in a ditch. The vehicle caught fire, spilling about 50 gallons of diesel fuel as a result of the crash, according to State Police.

State Police said Greenfield was transported to Albany Medical Center for a possible broken arm and burns to his arm.

State Police said all three lanes were closed for approximately 5 hours and traffic was diverted off of Exit 14 as state DOT, DEC and fire departments responded to the scene for firefighting efforts, cleanup and bridge repairs.
