Smoky fire damages building at transfer station

  • 0

WILTON — A smoky fire damaged a building and vehicles at a garbage transfer station in Wilton early Friday.

No injuries were reported in the blaze at the Hiram Hollow Transfer Station on Washburn Road. It was reported around 1:30 a.m. Friday.

Firefighters from around Saratoga County were called out, and smoke was visible from miles away as garbage and vehicles, including tractor-trailers and at least one bucket loader near the transfer station building burned.

Heavy equipment from the town of Wilton was brought in to help move around smoldering waste, according to Post-Star news partner WNYT-TV NewsChannel 13.

The cause had not been determined as of Friday morning. The facility had closed for the day late Thursday afternoon, and was expected to be closed indefinitely.

The facility is operated by Casella Waste Systems. The company had not said what arrangements were being made for disposal of waste that is brought to the station by area residents.
