CAMBRIDGE — Douglas Silvernell has been chosen as the new superintendent of the Cambridge Central School District, pending a Board of Education vote on Wednesday.

Board President Neil Gifford said in a news release that the board was grateful for the time and effort donated by the selection committee, and Silvernell was clearly the best choice.

"We are fortunate to have found a candidate that is not only exceptionally qualified with essential curriculum and management experience, but that also has the interpersonal and communication skills needed for effective leadership," Gifford said.

Silvernell is currently the assistant superintendent for 21st-century teaching and learning at the Saratoga Springs City School District. He was announced as the lone finalist last month and will replace Vincent Canini, who is retiring at the end of the year after nearly a decade as superintendent.

The board is offering Silvernell a four-year contract starting at $150,000 a year, and he is expected to begin his duties July 1, Gifford said.
