The pursuit began at the checkpoint in the southbound lanes in North Hudson around 4:15 p.m., when the driver of a 2010 Volkswagen refused to stop and sped away from officers.
Police initially lost him, but Border Protection officers spotted the car minutes later getting off the Northway at Exit 28, and the driver was taken into custody.
Marlon L. Johnson, 42, of Hogansburg, was charged with first-degree criminal possession of marijuana after he was found to have 44 pounds of the drug, according to State Police. He was arraigned and sent to Essex County Jail for lack of bail.
