Flags for veterans' graves

Volunteers place U.S. flags on the graves of veterans in the Glens Falls Cemetery ahead of Memorial Day in 2016.

Glens Falls American Legion volunteers are continuing a 153-year tradition of posting U.S. flags at about 2,000 veterans' graves at the Glens Falls Cemetery on Bay Street and at St. Mary’s Church Cemetery in South Glens Falls.

Many flags need replacing, and the Legion's account balance to buy more flags is in need of funds, according to a Legion news release.

The Glens Falls American Legion thanks those who have supported the Memorial Day tradition and is appealing to the community to make a donation for the next posting of flags.

Donations are payable to: American Legion Glens Falls, P.O. Box 285, Glens Falls, NY 12801.

In the United States, the formal decorating of veterans' graves began in Charleston, South Carolina, on May 1, 1865, one month after the Confederate surrender in the Civil War.
