FORT ANN — Emergency responders and State Police spent several hours at Great Meadow Correctional Facility on Monday morning after a white powder was discovered in the mail.

Great Meadow Fire Department and Fort Ann Rescue Squad responded to the maximum-security prison around 8:30 a.m. for a discovery of a suspicious powder in the "correspondence" room.

No illnesses were reported, and State Police said later Monday that the substance was not believed to be hazardous. The state Department of Corrections and Community Supervision is investigating.
