WILTON — After returning home from Saratoga Performing Arts Center on Friday night, Lisa Pleban found out she had a rude visitor come by her house on Kings Mills Road.

“We came home and pulled into the driveway and seen the gate smashed in,” she said.

Pleban first thought the intruder was a deer, but upon seeing the broken-in-half bird feeder, she knew it was a bear. She was quick to go from the car to the house, to say the least, she said.

“I hoped it’s still not back there,” she recalled. “We were running inside and locking it up.”

Pleban estimates there is about $100 worth of damage.

She said a bear had been rumored to be in the greater Wilton area. A neighbor told her a bear raid occurred about a mile and a half away a week ago, then a followup story later had a bear causing damage just a mile away.

For Pleban, it was pretty easy to determine where the bear was Friday night.

“Apparently they like bird feeders, and we had a couple of them out there,” she said.

The Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office dispatch told The Post-Star there were a couple bear reports in Wilton, but nothing outside of the area. He added that the department contacts the state Department of Environmental Conservation when a bear situation arises.

“I have a feeling they are still around here,” Pleban said.
