Meeting

* South Glens Falls Board of Education regular meeting, Monday evening

Top story

* The board voted 8-0 to hire Gregory Aidala as the interim superintendent of schools. He starts the job Tuesday and will stay on until June 30, 2011. Jeff Riggi, the board president, said Aidala was among three candidates for the job. He said the board was comfortable with Aidala, who has 19 years of experience as a superintendent. Aidala said he's excited to join the district. He said he wants to meet with employees to learn more about the district. He also wants to prepare the district for the start of classes, he said. Riggi said the board now has to decide on how to conduct the search for a superintendent to replace Aidala.

Other news

* Board member Tim Dalaba said he's concerned about the condition of the athletic fields, an issue that other people have brought to his attention. He asked if district officials could check on the fields' condition.

* A member of the audience asked the board if the district was going to hire teachers using funds from a federal bill that Congress passed last week to mitigate teacher layoffs. Audrey Varney, business manager, said South Glens Falls could receive $1.4 million. Interim Superintendent Jean Tedesco said decreases in enrollment were the cause for the staff reductions under the 2010-11 budget. As a result, the district might not use the federal funds, Tedesco said.
