SARATOGA -- More than 600 wreaths will be distributed at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery on Saturday as part of a nationwide effort to recognize fallen soldiers during the holidays.
The annual event, part of the Wreaths Across America campaign, will begin with wreath-laying at 9 a.m. Organizers say volunteers are invited to help, and that a public ceremony marking the occasion will take place at the cemetery beginning at noon. The cemetery is located at 200 Duell Road in the town of Saratoga.
Last year, more than 400 wreaths were distributed at the Saratoga cemetery.
Similar ceremonies will take place at more than 500 other cemeteries nationwide, including Arlington National Cemetery. Organizers expect more than 200,000 wreaths to be distributed this year.
The effort began 19 years ago when the Harrington, Maine-based Worcester Wreath Company began donating wreaths to be placed on headstones at the Arlington National Cemetery.
