GLENS FALLS — Achenbach’s Jewelers, a downtown fixture for decades, has closed, and the building is being sold.
The business at 220 Glen St. has shuttered its doors. Owner Judy Pontiff could not be reached for comment.
EDC Warren County President Edward Bartholomew said Pontiff has been working very hard and has reached a point in her life where she is looking to retire.
The building is being bought by the Associates of Glens Falls insurance company, which is located next door at 228 Glen St.
“We thank Judy for her time at Achenbach’s, and we’re working with (Associates of Glens Falls President) Chuck Gohn as they expand their business downtown with added square footage,” Bartholomew said.
Gohn did not return a message seeking comment.
Pontiff has owned the business since 2003.
In 2011, Achenbach’s Jewelers completed a $40,000 renovation of its store, which included rebuilding its merchandise showcases with custom oak and maple cabinets, installing LED lighting, reconfiguring the layout, adding five chandeliers and updating the carpet and painting, according to a Post-Star story.
The building was damaged in a February 2014 fire that also struck the Bullpen Tavern.
The entity that owns the building housing the jewelers, 220 Glen Street LLC, has an outstanding loan of $16,561 with the Glens Falls Local Development Corp. The business borrowed the money for various façade upgrades. Bartholomew said the LDC will be paid back the balance of the loan after the closing, which will occur next week.
