ROUND ROCK, Texas — Virginia “Ginny” Mary Perna, 85, of Round Rock, Texas, formerly of South Glens Falls, passed away on Thursday morning, Feb. 28, 2019 in Round Rock.
She was born in Gloversville on Nov. 20, 1933 to the late Louis and Mary Perrella Perna.
She is survived by sister, Linda (David) Cook of Round Rock, Texas; brothers, Rick (Carol) Perna of Gloversville, Fred (Mary) Perna and Donnie (Max) Perna, both of Johnstown, and Bob (Coreen) Perna of Niskayuna; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by sisters, Terry Piazza, Connie Putnam and Adora Ort; and brothers, Pat Perna, Louis Perna, David Perna and Richard Perna.
Ginny majored in surgical nursing at St. Mary’s in Amsterdam and served in the Sisters of St. Joseph for 15 years. She received her Bachelor of Science in education from the College of St. Rose in 1967 and she received her Master of Science in education from the College of St. Rose in 1972. She had a lifelong love of learning even after completing her master’s.
She started teaching while in the Sisters of St. Joseph and continued teaching at the Broad Street School in Glens Falls and spent many years teaching at Big Cross Street Elementary School in Glens Falls. She retired in 1994 and moved to Round Rock, Texas, in 2001.
She had a passion for reading, puzzles, history, particularly World War II, the New York Times crossword puzzle, fishing and especially her German Shepherds. She loved attending hockey games with friends and antiquing with her sister, Linda. She had a generous nature and was a very hard worker.
Funeral services will be held in Pflugerville, Texas, on March 5.
