LAKE LUZERNE — Thomas E. Diehl, 90, of Lake Avenue, passed away peacefully Friday morning, Feb. 8, 2019 at his home with his loving wife at his side.
Born on April 22, 1928 in Saratoga Springs, he was the son of Gertrude and Vivian Wheaton. He was a 1946 graduate of Corinth High School graduating third in his class and serving as class president.
Tom was drafted by the U.S. Army during World War II serving in the Transportation Corp. and earning the World War II Victory Medal prior to his honorable discharge in 1947. He then served in the National Guard until he was honorably discharged in 1949.
He was a 1951 graduate of DeVry University with High Honors. He married Mary Catherine Randolph on Jan. 26, 1979 in Utica. They had just celebrated their 39th anniversary.
Tom worked at International Paper Co. in Corinth for three years, then Bradon & Chapman for three years. He then began a 38-year career at General Electric as facilities engineering assistant. Tom had also worked as a State Park Ranger and as a security officer at Saratoga Hospital.
He was a member of the William J. Varney American Legion where he was a member of the color guard and had been honored as Grand Marshall of the 2014 Lake Luzerne Memorial Day Parade. He was a member of the Dog and Pup Hunting Club and had served as secretary; the Northwood Riders Snowmobile Club where he held offices and served in the Warren County Coordinator Group. He was a member of the AMT Motorcycle Club and the 40+ Motorcycle Club.
Tom was very civic minded and dedicated much of his spare time in service of the community. He was a Town Board member of Lake Luzerne, Town Councilman for 26 years only missing two meetings, Lake Luzerne Planning Board, and for 8 years served as deputy supervisor. He was a 3 year member of the Republican Committee, and board member of Adirondack Regional Hospital. He was a 46-year member of the Hadley Luzerne Lions Club where he had served as president, District Chairman as well as many other offices. He had been awarded the 100 percent President Award, the Melvin Jones Award for dedicated and humanitarian services. Most recently, Tom was the first recipient of the Hadley Luzerne Lions Club “Teacup Award.” He was a Knight of the Blind. He was a communicant of Holy Mother and Child Parish and a faithful participant at Christ The King Spiritual Life Center.
He is survived by his loving wife, Mary Catherine Diehl; his daughter, Carol Ann (Kenneth) Morrow of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; his son, Robert (Lori) Diehl of Wilton; five grandchildren, Ann Marie Diehl, Robert (Lisa) Diehl, Christopher (Theresa) Diehl, Rena Diehl, Thomas Morrow; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Services with military honors will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, Feb 11, 2019 at Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, Schuylerville.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Brewer Funeral Home Inc., 24 Church St., Lake Luzerne.
