September 14, 1927 — October 25, 2018
ESTERO, Fla. — Rita S. Briere, of Estero, Florida, passed away peacefully on Oct. 25, 2018, at the age of 91.
Rita was born on Sept. 14, 1927 in Glens Falls and was the daughter of the late Aldea and Vitalise Charlebois.
Rita is survived by her devoted husband of 72 years, Louis J. Briere; and their sons and daughters-in-law, David Davis of Plattsburgh, Richard and Nohemy Briere of Newton, Massachusetts, and David and Lisa Briere of Norcross, Georgia. Rita also leaves behind three cherished sisters, Irene Fitzgerald of Estero, Florida, Rose LaPlaca of Fort Myers, Florida, and Yvonne Stewart and her husband, Bill, of Estero, Florida; loving sister-in-law, Marion Mohan of Norcross, Georgia; nine beloved grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren; along with many adoring nieces and nephews.
Rita was predeceased by her sister, Therese Shaw, and her daughter-in-law, Kathy Davis.
In addition to their three sons, Rita and Louis raised 11 foster sons, as they owned and operated a dairy farm in Hudson Falls. After 21 years of farming, they sold their farm and turned to the real estate business for their second career. After 26 years as brokers of Briere Realty, they retired and began wintering at Corkscrew Woodlands in Estero. In 2015, the Briere’s moved to Florida permanently, enjoying their many close friends and family members in and around Corkscrew.
Over the years, Rita and Louis have had a lot of fun together. Rita told others, “the key to a happy marriage is to take up whatever activities your husband enjoys.” Consequently, they had many great seasons of bowling, golf, shuffle board, bocce and playing cards together. Rita was an excellent cook, and she always made people feel very welcome in their home. As the oldest of five daughters, she is a treasured big sister. Lou says that as a young woman, Rita was always the life of the party. She would sing and dance and make sure everyone had a good time.
Rita and Louis were the picture of devoted teamwork in marriage and an example for many. Lou’s faithful, gentle care of Rita in her final years was a beautiful testimony of his love for her. He treasures all the wonderful times they had together and was by her side holding her hand when she passed.
A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, at Our Lady of Light Catholic Church in Fort Myers, Florida. A luncheon reception will follow at Corkscrew Woodlands. The family encourages you to join them.
Interment will be at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Middle Granville at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hope Hospice of Fort Myers, Team 230.
