July 31, 1958 — November 13, 2018
RIPARIUS — Percy Gabriel DeCastro, 60, of Riverside Station Road, passed away at home Tuesday evening, Nov. 13, 2018 following a courageous battle with cancer.
Born on July 31, 1958 in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, he was the son of the late Raymunda Goncalves. He immigrated to the United States in 1980 and lived in the New York City area for 24 years, where he first worked in retail and later as a hair cutter in salons on and around Madison Avenue. He loved nature, particularly the mountains, and moved to Riparius in 2004 but continued to work in New York City, traveling by train to the city several days a week. In addition, he taught Portuguese lessons to a group of local home-schooled students.
Percy enjoyed meeting new people, and his outgoing, upbeat personality made a lasting impression on everyone he met. There was a special place in Percy’s heart for all of God’s creatures — great and small. He particularly enjoyed sitting on his porch watching the resident groundhog and the deer who frequented the field behind his home.
Left to cherish his memory are his husband, Andrew “Andy” Arenholz; his beloved canine companions, Massai and Shabu; his sisters, Aracy Mattos DoPatrocinio and Maria Jose Cesar, both of Brazil; and several nieces and nephews.
Percy’s family and friends wish to thank Dr. John Rugge and the staff of High Peaks Hospice for their compassionate care during his illness.
At Percy’s request, there will be no calling hours or services.
Arrangements are under the direction of Regan Denny Stafford Funeral Home in Queensbury.
