April 8, 1938 — December 26, 2017
SOUTH GLENS FALLS — Nancy E. Holmes, 79, of South Glens Falls, died on Tuesday, Dec. 26, 2017 at Glens Falls Hospital after a brief but serious illness.
She was born on April 8, 1938 in Glens Falls to Clarence and Marjorie (Stevens) Eckler. Nancy was a graduate of Glens Falls High School, Class of 1956, and received her bachelor’s degree in education from Potsdam College in 1960. She married David J. Holmes on Aug. 4, 1962.
She began her career as a first-grade teacher at Queensbury Elementary School, then left to raise her family. Having returned to teaching in the 1980s, she was active with NYSUT and the Southern Adirondack League of Teachers, working to improve compensation for substitute teachers before she began her final position as a first-grade teacher at Harrison Avenue Elementary School in South Glens Falls. It brought her great joy when former students invited her to their high school graduations or contacted her to say she’d inspired them to become teachers.
Nancy loved spending time with her family and friends. Prior to David’s passing in 1998, she spent many summers at the family camp on Loon Lake in Chestertown. She’d been a member of the Glens Falls Operetta Club and enjoyed attending the Glens Falls Symphony Orchestra concerts. After retirement, she began traveling with her sisters and other family members. One of her favorite activities was going out to lunch with her many friends. Nancy was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church of Glens Falls, where she spent many years as a Sunday School teacher and choir member. She was dedicated to local hockey, holding season tickets from the earliest years of the Adirondack Red Wings (and serving on the board of their Booster Club for many years) through to the current Thunder.
Nancy was predeceased by her parents, husband and sister, Caryl S. Eckler.
She is survived by her daughters, Debra Murphy (Todd) of Hudson Falls, Christine Chadwick (Steve Preston) of Queensbury and Diane Barnes (Tim) of South Glens Falls; grandchildren, Duncan and Keely Murphy, Ryan and Cierra Chadwick and Chloe, Matt and Chace Barnes; her sister, Jane Natale (Benny) of Pembroke, Massachusetts; many nieces, nephews and cousins; and her lifelong friend, Pauline (Peg) Moody of Glens Falls. She will be missed by her dog, Minnie, and cat, Frisky.
Nancy’s family extends their deepest appreciation to their friend, Jennifer Cosner, for her assistance to Nancy over the past few years and to the staff of Glens Falls Hospital 3W-A for their support in her final days.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 6 at the First Baptist Church on Maple Street in Glens Falls.
Spring burial will take place at Glens Falls Cemetery.
Calling hours are scheduled from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 5 at Regan Denny Stafford Funeral Home, 53 Quaker Road, Queensbury.
Memorial donations may be made in memory of Nancy to the Alzheimer’s Association, 4 Pine West Plaza, No. 405, Albany, NY 12205; or to the American Liver Foundation, 39 Broadway, Suite 2700, New York, NY 10006.
