June 22, 1950 — December 2, 2018
CHARLOTTE, NC — Kathryn ‘Kit’ or ‘Kitsy’ Elizabeth Mitra, 68, died on Dec. 2, 2018, after a courageous battle with ovarian cancer. She passed away at home in the care of her loving family.
Kit was born in Pottsville, Pennsylvania, to the late Paul and Kathryn Parton Achenbach.
Kit received a Master of Health Sciences degree from Duke University School of Medicine and worked as a physician assistant from 1993 until she began her cancer treatments in June 2017.
Kit’s love of animals and her visceral empathy for other living things led to her decision to become a vegetarian at age 17. Kit was an accomplished ceramic artist and an avid practitioner of yoga; she enjoyed deep friendships within these two communities. She loved music of all sorts, loved to dance and loved to cook and entertain friends. Kit had a fun-loving, playful personality and an uncanny ability to make an immediate connection with people from all walks of life; her love of life was infectious.
Kit is survived by husband, Avick (Ogi) Mitra; son, Michael Hodges, both of Charlotte; and sisters, Edde Walker of Denver, Colorado and Lyn Allen of Greensboro, North Carolina. Other important family members in Kit’s life included cousins, nephews, nieces and all of their children.
Kit’s recent struggles led her to a deeper appreciation for all the love and gifts that she had enjoyed in her life and confirmed for her that we should all do even more to extend ourselves to others who are less fortunate.
The celebration of her life will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 16, at St. Martin’s Episcopal Church.
It was Kit’s wish that donations be made to Second Harvest Food Bank or Humane Society of Charlotte in lieu of flowers.
