August 31, 1927—November 2, 2018
LAS VEGAS, NV — Kathleen Van Den Houten (Kay) England, 91, homemaker, passed away on Nov. 2, 2018 at Nathan Adelson Hospice in Las Vegas, Nevada. Kay and her husband, Frank Wesson England, were lifelong summer residents of Cleverdale.
Born in New York City on Aug. 31, 1927, Kay was raised in Albany by her parents, Genevieve (Lucas) and James L. Van Den Houten, who started the family tradition of summering at Lake George (Harris Bay). Kay attended St. Teresa’s and Vincentian Institute in Albany, graduating from College of St. Rose in June 1949 (B.A. in English), inspiring her love of literature, reading and bridge. Kay treasured and played the piano. Van Den Houten Square in East Greenbush was built by Kay’s father. Kay met Frank at the Albany Ski Club and they were married in January 1951, with a skiing honeymoon in Mont Tremblant, Canada. Kay and Frank raised their four daughters in East Greenbush, New York, Madison, New Jersey, and Cohasset, Massachusetts. Kay and Frank retired to Las Vegas and Lake George.
Kay was preceded in death in 2012 by Frank, her loving husband of 61 years, who called her “the light of his life”; by her parents, sister (Peggy) and brother (James, III). Kay is survived by five daughters, Jeanne Wilson of East Greenbush, New York, Deborah E. Zepnick (Glen) of Scottsdale, Arizona, Kathleen Jane England of Las Vegas, Terese E. Duggan (Chris) of Las Vegas and Janet M. England of Nashua, New Hampshire; five granddaughters, Andrea Laird (Justin), Valerie Davis (James), Alexandra MacCallum (Ryan), Kara Duggan, Maura Duggan; and two grandsons, Donald Couse (Cindy) and Timothy Couse; ten great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family wishes to thank all Kay’s caregivers, especially family friend Pam (Brown) Orologio, and the entire Brown family (Ballston Spa) for their friendship and love since our mothers (Kay and Pat) attended Vincentian. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 9, 2018 at Kraft-Sussman Services, 3975 S. Durango, LV, NV (online condolence book through website). A Funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 10, 2018 at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church, 1811 Pueblo Vista Dr., LV, NV.
Kay will be laid to rest next to Frank in Arlington National Cemetery in 2019. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Nathan Adelson Hospice, No. Queensbury Vol. Fire Dept (Cleverdale, NY) or a charity of your choice. Thank you.
