Joyce Willmen

June 22, 1943—May 15, 2019

QUEENSBURY — Joyce “Joy” Willmen, 75, passed away on May 15, 2019 at her home in Queensbury.

Born on June 22, 1943 in Long Island, she was the daughter of the late Erving and Katherine Sheridan.

In April of 1967, Joy married Richard Willmen at the Bolton Methodist Church in Bolton Landing. They spent a long and happy 51 years together.

Joy spent 27 years working as a kindergarten teacher at Moreau Elementary School in the South Glens Falls School District. For another two years, she taught kindergarten at Lake George Elementary School in the Lake George School District. She was honored to be the president of the Elementary Teachers’ Association of New York State. Joy was also the proud owner of Colonel Williams Resort in Lake George for 40 years.

She was a faithful member of the Church of the Good Shepard in Glens Falls for 30 years. Joy was also a member of the American Red Cross, where she worked in several disaster areas, including Houston and New Orleans. For nine years, Joy was a member of the Glens Falls Medical Mission, where she was able to travel to Guatemala to help build schools and aid the needy.

Joy and her husband, Richard, traveled on holiday to Anguilla, a British overseas territory in the eastern Caribbean, which is comprised of a small main island and several offshore islets. For 30 years, they traveled to Anguilla, and made many lifelong friends along the way.

After selling the motel in June of 2015, Joy and Richard traveled the country, visiting 49 states. They spent time traveling the backroads of the U.S., and enjoyed meeting unique and interesting people from all aspects of life. She had many adventures and experiences that she appreciated until the end of her time. Joy was also able to travel to Europe to experience the history and culture of Normandy, France.

Joy loved to read, mainly history books about the U.S. She also loved listening to her favorite music artist, Willie Nelson. Over the years, Joy attended many of Willie Nelson’s concerts in different states and cities. Every spring, she also enjoyed the Elvis Festival in Lake George. She attended this event with local friends and always looked forward to it throughout the year.

Joy loved her husband, two children, and friends unconditionally. She had a major impact on many young people’s lives as a teacher in Moreau Elementary School.

Survivors include her loving husband, Richard Willmen; her daughter, Jennifer Willmen; her son, Scott Willmen; her brother, Jack Sheridan; and her sister, Ellen Thompson.

Funeral services and burial will be held privately for the family.
