March 25, 1931 — February 8, 2019
GANSEVOORT and BENNINGTON, VT – Harry E. Farnsworth Jr., 87, passed away peacefully on Friday, Feb. 8, 2019, at Vermont Veterans Home in Bennington, Vermont.
Born March 25, 1931, in Castleton, Vermont, Harry was the son of Harry E. Farnsworth Sr. and Anna (Cartier) Hyde.
Harry served in the Army during the Korean War and was decorated with the Korean Service medal with one bronze star, United Nations Service medal and the National Defense Service medal. While he was away at war, he connected with a special pen pal, Viola Fedor.
Returning from the war, Harry and Viola got married. Together, the couple and their five children ran a dairy farm in Gansevoort. He also worked at Great Meadow Correctional Facility in Comstock, making his way up to sergeant, retiring from the prison after 30 years.
During his retirement, Harry enjoyed gardening, fishing and boating. He was an active member of Alcoholics Anonymous for many years and oftentimes arrived at meetings early. Harry was known for always carrying mints in his pocket and offering one to anyone around him. He was a proud man who carried his dignity with him throughout his life. A firm yet gentle-hearted man, Harry loved to dance and sing. He was a bundle of fun in his older years and many people fondly remember his sly humor.
The family would like to thank all of his “favorite” nurses and staff from Home of the Good Shephard in Wilton and Vermont Veterans Home for the exceptional care, dedication and love shown to Harry over the past year.
His wishes were to donate his body to science and his remains to be buried next to his brother in St. Alphonsus Cemetery in Glens Falls. Harry didn’t want a big get-together, rather, for everyone “to stop by and say ‘hi’ ” when they have a chance.
Harry was predeceased by his parents; sister and brother-in-law, Helen and Walter Purner of Arizona; his brother, Raymond Farnsworth of Hudson Falls; and grandson, Daniel Farnsworth of Gansevoort.
Left to cherish Harry’s memory are his sister, Doris Middleton of Hudson Falls; his former wife, Viola (Fedor) Farnsworth of Gansevoort; his daughter, Valeria Crossley and her husband, Parker, of Gansevoort; his daughter, Victoria Johnson and her fiance, Allan Stevens, of Gansevoort; his son, Daniel Farnsworth and his wife, Susan, of Gansevoort; his son, Harold Farnsworth and his wife, Jamie, of Gansevoort; his daughter, Virginia Ellis and her husband, Jeff, of Fort Ann; 12 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
