August 17, 1943 — March 8, 2019
GREENFIELD CENTER – Gelsomine (Gel) Torda passed away Friday, March 8, 2019 at Saratoga Hospital, surrounded by her loving family.
Born on Aug. 17, 1943 in Amsterdam, she was the daughter of the late Robert and Frances Bain.
Gel graduated from St. Mary’s of Glens Falls and Adirondack Community College. She furthered her studies, becoming a certified medical and legal transcriptionist and forming her own business, which she successfully operated right up until the time of her passing. Starting on a word processor at the kitchen table, she grew the business over time, employing many dedicated transcriptionists over the years.
She married John Anthony Torda on Aug. 14, 1965 in Hudson Falls. In later years, after raising their family, they enjoyed traveling, with Old Orchard Beach stealing their heart. The ocean gave Gel a great sense of relaxation, and she looked forward with great anticipation to her annual trips there. She and John also enjoyed their cabin in Fort Ann, making many memories with Ashley there. An avid reader, she enjoyed reading hundreds of books on the porch next to the waterfall. Her other passion was shopping (always double ordering everything) and spoiling her beloved children and grandchildren. She was all about giving, and she certainly did a lot of that; it gave her so much joy.
Besides her parents, she is predeceased by her brother-in-law, John Hart Sr.; niece, Katie Hart; and granddaughter, Alexis Anne Torda.
She is survived by her husband of 53 years, John of Greenfield Center; her beloved children, John Robert Torda (Tracy) of Porter Corners and Beth Anne Everetts (Mike) of Porter Corners; her very supportive and beloved sisters, Kathleen Hart and Margaret Thackrah; her cherished grandchildren, caregiver, Ashley Torda-Ecuyer (Tyler), Anthony Everetts, Nicole Everetts and Lindsey Torda; her nieces and nephews, John (Tori), Amanda (Matt) and Jamie (Jay); great-nieces and great-nephews, Aidan, Chloe, Corrina, Lilliana and two additional bundles of joy on the way; and her dog, Carly Claire, her faithful and loyal companion.
The family wishes to express great gratitude to Kindred Health and to Dr. Liebers for giving her precious time and instilling strength and motivation to keep fighting. We are forever thankful to him for not only his expertise, but his warm compassion. We thank the nurses of D2 and A3, specifically Marissa, Melissa and Teresa, for doing all in their power to keep her comfortable. Our thanks also to Samantha Millis for your home health care; Gel appreciated you so.
Services are private and at the convenience of the family.
