LAKE GEORGE — Gary Gabriel Filippelli, 85, went to Our Lord on June 7, with his wife and daughter by his side.

Gary was born on March 14, 1933, to Lucy (Vega) and Sebastian Filippelli in Jackson Heights, Queens.

Gary was a graduate of Stuyvesant High School in Manhattan and Hofstra University on Long Island, where he studied architecture. After college, he worked at Grumman Aerospace Corporation, Long Island, and later worked and was an integral part of Modern Artificial Flowers, his family’s business in New York City. He enjoyed creating the scenery for many Broadway productions and for the massive Christmas tree constructed and decorated in the Plaza Hotel.

He moved from East Meadow, Long Island to Lake George in 1969, where he became a general contractor, building and renovating many custom homes along the shores of Lake George, Crystal Lake and the Sacandaga.

For many years, Gary was an active member of the Lake George Town Planning board. Recently, he became Chairman of the Board of Assessors of the Town of Lake George.

Gary was an active member of Sacred Heart Church and Parish Community in Lake George. An usher for many years and member and Chairman of Building and Grounds, he enjoyed teaching Middle School Faith Formation. A 4th Degree Knight of Columbus, he enjoyed the fellowship and bond of brotherhood of his fellow Knights and served as their financial secretary for many years.

Gary was a huge Dallas Cowboys fan, an avid reader, a coin and stamp collector and master gardener. He actively supported and respected our military.

Gary worked, up until his death, with his wife, Irene in her family’s business, O’Connor’s Resort Cottages on Lake George. He enjoyed our foreign student workers, made sure they were cared for and that they enjoyed the experience of the Lake George Region and America. Irene will miss his amazing creativity, his attention to detail, his diligence and his great ability to streamline the day-to-day operations at O’Connor’s.

In addition to his parents, Gary was predeceased by his daughter, Lisa.

Gary is survived by his wife of 33 years, Irene (O’Connor) Filippelli; and their daughter, Sarah O’Connor-Filippelli; his sons, Gary and John; granddaughter, Laura and brother, Donald (Brigitta); and their children, Nicholas, Christina and Alexandra and their spouses.

Special thanks to Dr. Schwenker, who cared for Gary for many years, and more recently to Dr. Kayalar, Dr. Sawyer, Dr. D’Agostino and the nursing and support staff at Glens Falls Hospital.

There will be no calling hours. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, June 12, at Sacred Heart Church in Lake George. Everyone is invited to a luncheon after Mass in the Sacred Heart Parish Center.

Mass cards for Gary’s soul will be gratefully received. Memorial donations, in lieu of flowers, can be made to Sacred Heart Church, the Knights of Columbus of Lake George and/or St. Mary’s-St. Alphonsus Regional Catholic School in Glens Falls.

Arrangements are under the care of Regan Denny Stafford Funeral Home, Queensbury.
