Esther Lillian (Evans) Gardner, 93, passed away on Thursday, March 5, 2009, at the Indian River Nursing Home in Granville. She was a long time resident of Elmira, N.Y.

Born in Elmira, N.Y. on May 19, 1915, she was the daughter of the late Harry and Ermina (Walker) Evans.

She married Decker Lloyd Gardner on Oct. 18, 1947, in the Pennsylvania Avenue Methodist Church in Elmira.

Esther graduated from Southside High School in Elmira in 1932, and worked as a secretary for Hardinge Brothers in Elmira for many years. She retired as a secretary after working for American LaFrance.

Esther was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene and later attended the Erin United Methodist Church in Erin, N.Y.

She was a member of the Erin Historical Society and took great pleasure in travelling with various senior citizens groups.

Besides her parents, Esther was was predeceased by her husband and a sister, Jane E. (Evans) Boyd.

Survivors include a daughter, Gloria (Gardner) Kelley and her husband, Robert, of South Glens Falls; a granddaughter, Kathleen Erin Kelley of Wilkes-Barre, Pa.; a niece, Carole Lynn Boyd, of Cary, N.C.; a nephew, Keith L. Boyd of Raleigh, N.C.; as well as several grand and great-grand nieces and nephews.

At Esther's request there will be no calling hours.

Graveside services will be conducted on Monday, March 9, 2009, at 1 p.m. at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Elmira by Esther's nephew, the Reverend Donald Maynard, of the Canisteo Wesleyan Church in Canisteo, N.Y.

Donations in Esther's memory may be made to the First Church of the Nazarene, 1136 Broadway, Elmira, New York, 14904 or the Erin-Sullivanville United Methodist Church, 69 Old Sullivanville Road, Horseheads, NY 14845.
