FORT EDWARD — Elizabeth “Jean” Matt, 83, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Dec. 31, 2017 at Saratoga Center for Rehab, surrounded by her children.
Born on July 6, 1934 in Glens Falls, she was the daughter of the late James and Alice (Regner) Carpenter.
Jean attended Fort Edward High School. On July 10, 1954, she married Elwin “Bud” Matt at St. Joseph Church in Fort Edward. They spent 62 great years together until his passing on Sept. 8, 2016.
She spent her life caring for children, nieces, nephews, friends and grandchildren, and was fortunate enough to know and love her four great-grandchildren. Jean had many fond memories working as a teacher’s aide at Fort Edward Elementary School for many years.
Jean and Bud loved camping, traveling and going on long car rides and lunch dates when they could. She had a special love for casinos and slot machines. Later in life, Jean cared graciously for her ailing husband. Jean had a beautiful voice and was a great dancer, but she especially loved to Jitter Bug with her sisters.
In addition to her parents and husband, Jean was predeceased by her brothers, John, Bill, Jim, Dick, Butch, Paul, Robert and Joe Carpenter; and several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
Left to cherish her memory include her daughter, Linda Godfrey and her husband, Tom, of Fort Edward; son, Frank Matt of Glens Falls; grandchildren, Ian Godfrey and his wife, Ashley, of Stillwater, Emily Boucher and her husband, Matthew, of South Glens Falls, Steven Matt and his wife, Lynette, of South Glens Falls and Sarah Beth Matt of Warrensburg; great-grandchildren, Elle and Matthew Boucher and Hunter and Cole Matt, all of South Glens Falls; her sisters, Helen O’Connell, Sally Trainor and her husband, Robert, Carolyn Cutler, Kay Gorham, Jaqueline Pasterchick and her husband, Mike, and Cindy Baker and her husband, Kenny; her brothers, Fran Carpenter and his wife, Doris, and Mickey Carpenter and his wife, Colleen; Colleen Massa (Mario), who was like a daughter to her; along with many nieces, nephews and cousins.
At Jean’s request, there will be no calling hours.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 5 at St. Joseph’s Church, 164 Broadway, Fort Edward, NY 12828.
Burial will be conducted in the spring at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Fort Edward.
