David E. McDougall Sr.

FORT EDWARD - David E. McDougall Sr., 78, of The Oaks in Fort Edward, passed away suddenly on Wednesday, July 29, 2009, at the Glens Falls Hospital after enjoying a full life.

Born Feb. 10, 1931, in Fort Edward, N.Y., he was the son of the late Clayton F. McDougall Sr. and Katharine (Woodford) McDougall.

David was a graduate of Fort Edward High School. In 1955, he received his teaching degree from Oswego.

His teaching career began in the Hadley-Luzerne School District as an Industrial Arts instructor; then, he went on to Fort Ann teaching Math as well as coaching basketball. David retired in 1985, from Schuylerville Jr. High School were he also taught Industrial Arts.

David enjoyed a multitude of other professions, one notably being the original owner of the Anvil Inn in Fort Edward. He opened The Anvil on New Year's Eve 1975, after working with several of his friends to renovate the former Sam Turner Blacksmith Shop. Summers off from teaching found David down at the Saratoga Race Track as a first aid responder, carpenter, Pinkerton, or teller. After his retirement, driving the Train at Story Town became a fun addition to his many careers.

Community service was important to David as former Chief and 50-plus year member of the George Satterlee No. 2 Hose Company in Fort Edward, former Town Justice for Fort Edward and Argyle, as well as former Assesor for Argyle. Other memberships included the Free & Accepted Masons of Fort Edward, Fort Edward Lions Club, The Vagabonds Drum & Bugle Corps, Queensbury Elks, and the Idle Hour.

A man of many interests, he took up bee keeping, investing in old car restoration, and bowling. David still had time to enjoy the Saratoga racing season; summers at Lake George, fishing and riding in his 1952 Chris-Craft "Babe's Dream," and socializing with his friends.

Besides his parents, David was predeceased by an infant son, Dwight David McDougall; his brothers Gerald W. McDougall, and Clayton F. "Babe" McDougall Jr.

Survivors include his wife, Marjorie McDougall of Argyle; his daughter, Mary Ellen Griffin and her husband, Mark, of Glen Allen, Va. and their children, Christopher Griffin and his wife, Kathryn, and Katharine Griffin; his son, David McDougall Jr. and his wife, Deven, of Gloversville, and their son, David McDougall III; his son, John McDougall Sr. and his wife, Robin, of Queensbury, and their children, John McDougall Jr., and Thomas McDougall; his stepchildren: Michael Case and his wife, Linda, Julia O'Neil, Brian Case, and Stephanie Euber and her husband, Jonathan, all of Argyle; several step-grandchildren; and, several cousins.

Memorial services will be conducted following calling hours at the funeral home with the Rev. Stephen McLean, pastor of the Argyle United Presbyterian Church, officiating.

Since it was David's wish to be part of the Anatomical Gift Program at Albany Medical College, graveside services will be conducted at a later date.
